Known for its ready-to-wear fashion, SMYTHE is adapting to meet consumer demands while continuing its expansion. Co-founder Andrea Lenczner expressed her excitement about the new Calgary location, highlighting the brand’s strong customer base in Alberta, which is the largest outside of Ontario.

The new SMYTHE store, spanning 1,500 square feet, is located in CF Chinook Centre that opened on February 23, 2024. The store has featured an extensive collection of SMYTHE clothing, including the latest seasonal offerings and the brand’s signature line, SMYTHEHOUSE. The grand opening event welcomed guests to explore the new space while enjoying treats and refreshments.

Lenczner emphasized the strategic choice of Calgary for the new store, especially after the exit of Nordstrom Canada, creating a market gap. The store’s design was led by local designer Nam Dang Mitchell, admired by Lenczner and her co-founder, Christie Smythe. Mitchell was tasked with bringing her unique touch to the Calgary store, mirroring the aesthetics of their Toronto location.

Background and Expansion Plans

Launched in 2004, SMYTHE opened its first standalone store in Toronto two years ago. While Lenczner did not disclose specific future locations, she mentioned plans to expand throughout North America, targeting cities such as Montreal, New York, Los Angeles, and Nashville. The ideal SMYTHE storefront is envisioned to be between 1,000 to 1,500 square feet, located in upscale shopping areas near home furnishing retailers, fitness centers, and cafes.

New Offerings and Digital Expansion

SMYTHE’s Toronto store, located at 1116 Yonge Street, spans 1,250 square feet and was designed by Ashley Bottom and Tommy Smythe. The brand’s journey began with the founder’s desire to create perfect blazers for women. Today, SMYTHE is also known for its accessories, including hats, scarves, and fragrances, in partnership with Fueguia 1833.

In addition to store expansions, SMYTHE is focusing on enhancing its digital presence and product offerings. The brand aims to grow its team and infrastructure to meet its growth targets, continuously developing new products. SMYTHE’s exclusive collection, SMYTHEHOUSE, has resonated well with customers, and the brand plans to expand this collection by listening to consumer feedback. Lenczner highlighted the brand’s commitment to bringing newness and excitement to its stores through collaborations and seasonal collections. The Spring 2024 collection is already available, promising constant updates and fresh designs.

Ethical and Social Responsibility

SMYTHE is also committed to making a positive impact through its collaboration with Augden. This partnership celebrates the craftsmanship of indigenous Incan artists who handcraft pieces using locally sourced alpaca yarns from the Andes Mountains. The collaboration empowers women artisans, supporting their families and communities, aligning with SMYTHE’s values of luxury, ethical, and social responsibility.

SMYTHE’s collections are available in multi-brand retailers such as Holt Renfrew, Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Andrew’s, Carriage Trade, and Simon’s. “The store itself is worth a visit,” said Lenczner, praising Nam Dang Mitchell’s exceptional design work. SMYTHE is proud of its new Calgary store and looks forward to continuing its growth and innovation in the fashion industry.
